Lime Plastering Completed at St Peter’s Church, FormbyBy Master Plasterer Mr Colin Morris
We’ve just completed the lime plastering works at the beautiful St Peter’s Church in Formby. Built in 1746, this classically proportioned church is a real gem and an important part of the town’s heritage. The present building was constructed to replace an earlier chapel that stood closer to the coast but was destroyed by a violent storm in 1739, prompting the decision to rebuild further inland where the church still stands today.
In today’s construction industry, where speed and standardisation often dominate, decorative plasterwork continues to offer something unique — craftsmanship, character, and architectural distinction. In Australia’s capital region, Penash Plaster Products has built a strong reputation for delivering exactly that.
Based in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, the company specialises in handcrafted fibrous plaster, particularly decorative cornices and ceiling roses. Their products are locally manufactured and made to order, allowing them to suit both heritage restorations and modern interiors.
Penash combines traditional plastering skills with contemporary trade services. Alongside manufacturing decorative mouldings, the company provides plaster repairs, plasterboard installation, and specialist insurance work. This broad capability reflects the evolving role of modern plaster specialists, who must balance craftsmanship with practical construction demands.
Decorative plaster remains highly valued because it offers more than visual appeal. Cornices and ceiling centres help soften wall-to-ceiling transitions, conceal imperfections, and add architectural identity to a space. In heritage buildings, they are essential for authenticity; in new homes, they provide individuality and a sense of quality.
A key strength of Penash lies in its local production. Manufacturing within the ACT region enables close collaboration with builders and designers, ensures quality control, and allows custom profiles to be created efficiently.
Ultimately, Penash Plaster Products represents a craft tradition that continues to thrive. By combining time-honoured techniques with modern construction practice, the company demonstrates that decorative plasterwork remains an enduring feature of quality interiors.
Myths of PlasteringBy Master Plasterer David Winchester
Plastering is one of the oldest building crafts, and like any long-standing trade it has accumulated a fair number of myths. Some are harmless, others actively lead to poor workmanship or inappropriate repairs—especially in heritage buildings. Below are some of the most common plastering myths, explained and corrected.
The Evolution of Plaster Mixing Equipment in Britain
The history of plaster mixing equipment in Britain reflects wider transformations in construction practices, labour systems, and materials technology. From Roman occupation to the digital age, the way plaster has been prepared and applied has steadily advanced.

A plaster panel mould is a purpose-made mould used to cast flat decorative plaster panels — usually for ceilings, wall panels, friezes, or ornamental features in fibrous plasterwork. Think of it as a reusable “form” that allows a plasterer or fibrous worker to reproduce the same decorative panel accurately and repeatedly.

It’s not often you come across a product that genuinely benefits the domestic plastering market. When I discovered Shark Bags, my first thought was, I wish these had been around years ago when I was still on the tools.
For decades, plasterers have faced the same frustrating problem: what do we do with the wastewater from washing out buckets? The concept behind Shark Bags finally offers a practical, effective solution to an issue the industry has lived with for far too long. Read more about Shark Bags.
The Master Plasterer Certificate honours individuals who have attained the highest level of skill in the plastering industry, demonstrating exceptional expertise, craftsmanship, and mastery developed over many years of dedicated practice.
The darby is one of the most recognisable yet often overlooked tools in traditional plastering. Long, flat, and fitted with handles, it is designed to level wet plaster or render over large surfaces. While modern versions are made from aluminium or magnesium, the origins of the darby stretch back much further into the history of construction and finishing trades.
My name is Carolyne Chardac, I live in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. I have always been a creative girl since I was young. I was born and raised in the south near New Orleans, I grew up going into opulent historical homes, always being impressed with decorative arts and I feel this subconsciously led me to where I am today. In my free time, I love nature and find my peace traveling to Utah and Wyoming to hike and explore. I love to discover wildlife in their natural habitat. I am a huge advocate for the American Bison and conservation of this national mammal. I am the proud mother of an English Mastiff named Winston and two sons. I enjoy listening to music while I work and you will find my Spotify list is long and varied.

From Apprentice to National Finalist: Blake’s SkillBuild Journey
Blake’s story is the heart of the piece. His setback in 2024 and comeback in 2025 adds emotional depth and shows resilience. This is excellent storytelling.
From Heritage Cornice to helical staircases – meet the man preserving plastering’s lost art.
Some tradespeople build houses. Others build legacies. Dean Nash does both.
In an age of quick fixes and disposable finishes, Dean stands apart as a true custodian of craft. With more than 35 years on the tools, he has quietly become the go-to expert for the jobs no one else wants – the intricate, the curved, the historically sensitive, and the technically demanding. From rescuing century-old railway stations to shaping breathtaking multi-storey helical staircases, Dean’s work proves that plastering is not just a trade, but an art form What makes Dean’s story so compelling isn’t just his technical mastery, but how it began – following his father to worksites as a kid, learning skills that today are slowly disappearing from the industry. When the last local fibrous plaster manufacturer closed, Dean didn’t just see a business opportunity – he saw a responsibility to preserve knowledge, moulds, and methods that might otherwise have been lost forever
Readers will be inspired by Dean’s passion for heritage restoration, his fearless approach to complex geometry, and his belief that the hardest jobs are often the most rewarding. But perhaps most powerful is his honesty. In a trade where silence is the norm, Dean speaks openly about mental health, reminding us that strength isn’t about toughing it out – it’s about speaking up This is a story about craftsmanship, resilience, and passing knowledge forward. It’s about curves, cornices, and courage. And it’s about a bloke who proves that doing things the hard way – the right way – still matters.
If you’ve ever admired a beautifully finished ceiling, wondered how heritage buildings are truly restored, or needed a reminder that it’s okay to not be okay, this is a story you’ll want to read.
Elizabethan Strap CeilingsBy Master Plasterer David Winchester
Eizabethan strap ceilings are a type of decorative plaster ceiling made in England in the late 1500s and early 1600s. They are most often found in large houses owned by wealthy families. These ceilings are known for raised plaster lines that cross and link together to form patterns. The raised lines look like leather straps laid across the ceiling surface. This is why they are called strap ceilings.

1 You are a cowboy and you will never make a plasterer as long as you live

4 Plasterboard: Revolutionising Wall Construction Since 1894
Plasterboard, also known as drywall, is a widely used material for building walls and ceilings. It was invented by an American named Augustine Sackett in 1894. Before this invention, constructing walls was a slow and messy process. Workers had to attach wooden strips called laths to wall frames and then cover them with wet plaster, which took days to dry.
5 The History of Fibrous Plastering: From Ancient Art to Modern Design
Fibrous plastering is a centuries-old craft used to create decorative architectural elements. It combines plaster with hessian (burlap) and a lightweight timber or wire framework to form intricate mouldings, ceilings, and ornamental designs. Over time, the technique has evolved alongside changes in artistic styles, materials, and construction methods.
They used to call me the old school plasterer. I never asked for the nickname, but I reckon it came from how I started — the hard way.Back in the early 1970s, building sites were more like the Wild West than workplaces. Health and safety didn’t exist. You had no job security. It was survival of the fittest. And if you couldn’t keep up, you were out — simple as that.

8 The UK Building Trade Strike of 1972 and the Shrewsbury Seven
The UK building trade strike of 1972 was a pivotal moment in British labour history, highlighting tensions between the working class and the establishment. The strike, which sought improved wages and safer working conditions, resulted in a dramatic confrontation between trade unions and the government. A significant consequence of this dispute was the prosecution of the Shrewsbury Seven, a group of trade unionists who became embroiled in a controversial trial that exposed the political and legal forces against organized labour.
9 Portland Cement: The Invention That Changed Building Forever
Joseph Aspdin was an English bricklayer who changed the world. He invented **Portland cement** in 1824. This invention helped create modern concrete, which is used in buildings, bridges, roads, and many other structures. Even though he was not a scientist or engineer, Aspdin’s idea became one of the most important in construction history. This essay will explain who Joseph Aspdin was, what Portland cement is, how he invented it, and why it matters today.

10 A Historical Timeline of Plastering Trowels in the UK
Plastering trowels have been essential tools for centuries, shaping the walls and ceilings of homes, churches, and great halls across Britain. The question of which company first sold plastering trowels in the UK is not straightforward. Before the rise of industrial tool brands, these implements were the domain of local smiths and small workshops. Few printed records exist from this period, so early trowel production remains shrouded in practical necessity rather than commercial documentation.
11 From Apprentice to Freeman: The Journey of the Plasterer, from 1600
Plastering is one of the oldest and most enduring building crafts. Its smooth walls and ornate ceilings have shaped our architectural heritage, yet behind every elegant cornice lies a story of skill, discipline, and centuries of tradition. Between 1600 and 1950, the path from apprentice to freeman in the plastering trade reflected not only the evolution of craftsmanship but also the changing fabric of British society — from guild regulation and city charters to industrialisation and technical education.
From Vision to Reality: The Shark Bag Success Story
My plastering journey began about 12 years ago when we bought our first house. It was a fixer-upper, and we were on a tight budget! That meant I had to learn some new skills fast—plastering being one of them. I was already quite handy, and I picked it up quickly. Before long, I was achieving a finish as good as any professional plasterer I knew.
The history of women in plastering dates back to the 1600s and tells a story of slow but steady progress in a male-dominated trade. In the 17th and 18th centuries, plastering was almost exclusively done by men. The physically demanding nature of the work, along with strict societal norms, kept women from joining the trade.
We’re always on the lookout for inspiring stories and the remarkable work of skilled craftspeople . If you have a unique journey, project, or craft you’d like to share, we want to hear from you. Tell us your story—you could be our next featured creator. Let’s celebrate creativity, one craft at a time.
Welcome to the 14th edition of Lath and Plaster Magazine.
When I was first approached to run a publication dedicated solely to the plastering trade, I’ll admit I had my doubts. Would it attract enough interest? Would the industry truly embrace it? One year on, I’m delighted to say those questions have been answered—and then some. Our readership now spans Europe, the USA, and Australia, with a loyal and steadily growing community of plasterers, artisans, and enthusiasts around the world.
Each month we see more professionals engaging with us, sharing their projects, techniques, and passion for the craft. It’s a testament to how vibrant and innovative this trade continues to be.
In this edition, you’ll find all of our regular features plus a host of new insights. We’re pleased to welcome Melloneye Harvey to the editorial team, who opens up about her journey into the plastering world and her commitment to advancing plastering education.
We also spotlight standout work from across the industry—from the meticulous restoration of a historic ceiling at Tranby School to the forward-thinking approaches of today’s modern craftspeople, including the inspiring work of RT Plastering.
Thank you for being part of this growing community. Enjoy the issue!

Congratulation to one of our editors Mr Keith Langton
Keith visited Plaisterers’ Hall in London to collect the FIS and Worshipful Company of Plaisterers Training Awards. While there, he picked up the Saint-Gobain Training Trophy.
Please welcome a new member to our editorial teamMelloneye Harvey
I was incredibly fortunate to find my way into the plastering trade—it came to me entirely by chance. After completing my Sculpture degree in London, I stumbled across an advertisement posted by the NHTG for an apprenticeship at Keith Langton’s workshop in Wakefield. It was a big move for me, relocating from Somerset with no prior background in construction, but without a doubt, it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.
Heritage plaster restoration by Swart Plaster Mouldings
Vaulted Barrell ceiling repairs at Tranby School
When Tranby School discovered water damage to one of its historic vaulted barrel ceilings, they asked Swart Plaster Mouldings to carry out a sensitive and accurate restoration. The ceiling — a key architectural feature of this period building — had previously been subjected to poor-quality repairs, concealing original details and causing ongoing issues.
The last few weeks have been a different kind of crazy—in the best way possible. I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to New Jersey to teach two weekend Pargetting courses in Jersey City.
The plasterer’s tool kit has evolved from simple ancient implements to today’s specialized equipment. Early plasterers used wooden floats, reed brushes, and rudimentary trowels to apply lime-based plasters in Egypt, Greece, and Rome. During the Middle Ages, metalworking advances introduced stronger iron trowels and knives. The Industrial Revolution expanded tool variety, adding steel floats, hawks, and gauges for precision. Modern kits now combine traditional hand tools with ergonomic designs and durable materials, reflecting centuries of refinement.
A Historical Timeline of Plastering Trowels in the UK
Plastering trowels have been essential tools for centuries, shaping the walls and ceilings of homes, churches, and great halls across Britain. The question of which company first sold plastering trowels in the UK is not straightforward.
When people talk about historic tools in the plasterers trade they usually think of trowels and floats. Yet one of the most distinctive and practical tools in building history is the lath hammer also called the lathing hammer or lath hatchet.
A devil float is a plasterer’s tool that has been used for many years. Similar tools were even used by the Ancient Egyptians when plastering the walls of their tombs.
With over 20 years of hands-on experience, I am a dedicated plasterer committed to delivering high quality workmanship on every project. My journey into the trade began at a young age, inspired by my dad who worked as a painter and decorator. After helping him on jobs and discovering a natural talent for the craft, I went on to train under some of the most respected professionals in the industry. This shaped both my skills and my work ethic.
You might have noticed that we have rebranded from Thats Skimming Alright to The Plasterers Podcast The Mick and Dave Show. This change was made to help us appear more clearly in online searches. A title that includes the word plasterers makes it easier for Google to recognise what the podcast is about, helping more people in the trade find us.
Discovering Plastering Skills at Lancashire Cricket Club
The Craft Careers Day at Lancashire Cricket Club in Manchester buzzed with excitement, curiosity, and plenty of hands-on action. Students gathered to watch — and enthusiastically jump into — live demonstrations led by Keith and Dale.
The concept behind Shark Bags finally offers a practical, effective solution to an issue the industry has lived with for far too long.Read more about Shark Bags.
Our last two church projects of the year! St Peter’s Church, Formby and St Margaret’s Church, Oldham.
Once again, we’re carefully removing and reinstating traditional lime plasterwork damaged by water ingress. It’s always saddening to see how much harm even small amounts of water can cause to the fabric of these historic places of worship in such a relatively period short time.
National Association of Plastering Lecturers Meeting – 14 October

Hosted at City College Liverpool, the event brought together representatives from a wide range of colleges, training providers, and industry organisations, all committed to the continued development of plastering education and practice.

Haunting Secrets Behind the Walls
You could smell the damp before you even walked into the place. Old Victorian terrace, gutted down to the studs, half the plaster stripped and crumbling. The boss wanted it skimmed quick before the frost hit. Three-man crew: Daz, Connor, and Lee.

Two lads, one mic, and not a clue between them. Mick and Dave swap the trowels for tall tales, bringing you fortnightly stories, banter, and total chaos
I’m lucky enough to have grown up in Devon with quite a different upbringing than most. From the age of one, I was going to Glastonbury Festival on the Green Craft Field with my father, who really ignited my interest in wood, traditional crafts, and dying skills. He worked on top of Exmoor teaching local schoolkids—often the ones who weren’t thriving in classrooms—skills like hedge-laying, dry-stone walling, and forestry. It was like catnip to me.
Two lads, one mic, not a clue – and that’s exactly how we like it.
If you’d told me a few years ago that I’d be co-hosting a podcast, I’d have laughed you off the scaffold. I’m a plasterer, not a presenter. But here we are – That’s Skimming Alright is live, and me and Dave are chatting our way through the plastering world one episode at a time. So, why did we start it? Simple. Because no one else was.
Restoration of Historic Hotel Ceiling in Stratford-upon-Avon
When tasked with restoring the lobby of a Grade II* hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon, we knew the project would test every facet of our conservation and plaster restoration expertise.
We recently completed lime plastering work on two very different churches – St. Michael and St. John’s in Clitheroe and St. Paul’s in Blackley, Manchester.
Colin McCaughey is a self-employed trainer and assessor in the plastering trade, with a long-standing and respected career in both practical and educational aspects of the field. Interestingly, his journey into plastering began by chance rather than by design. Initially, Colin had applied for a plumbing course at his local government training centre. After completing the interview process, he was informed that the plumbing course was full and was instead offered a place in the plastering program. Despite the unexpected change, Colin never looked back and soon developed a deep passion for the trade.

James Collie Studio Update: Preparing for the Christmas Fair and Upcoming Teaching Adventurers
It’s been a little while since I last did much in the way of pargetting or lime plastering, but the quieter studio time has given me the chance to focus on a few creative side projects. One of them is a new piece I’ve just finished — a plaster relief of a horse — created especially for the Christmas Fair at Designermakers 21 in Diss.

Thinking about getting into teaching plastering but not sure where to start?
Mick and Dave have spent years on the tools before moving into the classroom, bringing over three decades of combined experience teaching plastering.
In this episode, we explore the journey from trowel to teacher. You’ll learn what qualifications are actually required, how to make the leap from site work to education, and what it’s really like to train the next generation of plasterers.
Whether you’re ready for a career change or simply curious about passing on your skills, this episode will give you a clear picture of the opportunities — and the challenges — of teaching the trade.
Why Yellow Pine is Ideal for Devil FloatsBy Mick Hargreaves
The devil float is used because it levels the first coat of plaster and scratches it so that the next coat will bond properly. This has been the same job for thousands of years, ever since plasterers first worked on Egyptian tombs.
Why Traditional Plastering Skills Are Disappearing by David Winchester
Step into an old house or historic building and run your hand along the wall — you may notice something different. Instead of the perfectly flat, uniform surfaces of modern drywall, these walls have a subtle texture, a soft warmth, and a quiet depth. What you’re feeling is traditional lath and plaster — a technique that has shaped buildings for centuries.
Mary works along with her father and brother at the family business Plaster Mouldings Direct, their journey spans over three decades of passionate work producing and installing top-quality plaster, stone, and specialty mouldings.

The 1972 Building Workers’ Strike, By David Winchester
The building workers’ strike of 1972 was one of the most important strikes in Britain after the Second World War. It involved hundreds of thousands of workers from many different building trades. They came together to demand better pay, safer working conditions, and shorter hours. The strike showed that even in a difficult industry to organise, workers could take action and win major gains.
Mr. Colin Morris began plastering at the age of 16, when he was offered an opportunity by a family friend at Fylde Plasterers in Blackpool, Lancashire. From the start, he displayed a natural aptitude for the trade — the skills came easily, and as his confidence grew, he began to appreciate its architectural artistry.
The Master Plasterer Certificate honours individuals who have attained the highest level of skill in the plastering industry, demonstrating exceptional expertise, craftsmanship, and mastery developed over many years of dedicated practice.

From Vision to Reality: The Shark Bag Success Story
My journey into plastering started around 12 years ago when we purchased our first home—a true fixer-upper. With a tight budget, hiring professionals wasn’t always an option, so I had to quickly pick up new skills, plastering included. Thankfully, I was already fairly handy, and I took to it quickly. Before long, I was achieving finishes that matched, if not rivaled, those of seasoned professionals.

Olde World Walls & Ceilings’sHistoric Bunnell City Hall
We recently had the honour of restoring part of the coquina block at the Historic Bunnell City Hall building, and we’re excited to share some photos and a bit of the building’s fascinating history with you!
From a young age, I was surrounded by the world of heritage and craftsmanship. My parents ran a conservation company based in Bristol, working on numerous historic buildings and churches across the South West. It was through watching my father’s meticulous approach to preserving these remarkable structures that I found my inspiration. I wanted to be a part of that legacy, and training as a plasterer felt like a natural path to follow in his footsteps and contribute to the family tradition.
From a young age, I was captivated by the intricate beauty of volumetric sculptures and reliefs created by master artisans throughout history. The way these forms could transform a space and tell a story resonated with me deeply, sparking a lifelong fascination with the art of plastering. Over time, my passion only grew stronger as I realized how much creativity, skill, and craftsmanship are involved in bringing architectural visions to life.
I’ve been working on a couple of pet portraits lately and I’m genuinely thrilled with how they turned out — and thankfully, so are the clients! 😅 It’s always a bit nerve-wracking doing these kinds of commissions because pets mean so much to their owners. Capturing that unique expression or quirk in a face made of lime plaster is no small task — but that’s the challenge I love most.

James Collier the Pargeter on Fix radio
I was honoured when a member of the team at Fix Radio reached out to ask if I would consider making a sign for them. It was a flattering request, and I gladly accepted without hesitation. I love creating unique pieces, and this was an exciting project to take on.
Steven started learning plastering at 18 when he joined a course at Burnley College. However, he wasn’t the most dedicated student and left without earning a qualification. Instead, he gained hands-on experience by working in the plastering trade for several years, learning valuable skills along the way.
My inspiration to pursue a career in plastering came from my passion for creativity and the satisfaction of seeing a project come together. The ability to transform a space and witness the final outcome was incredibly appealing. Additionally, I was motivated by the fact that plastering was a predominantly male industry at the time, and I wanted to challenge the norm and establish myself in the field.
