Lath and Plaster

A Trade Magazine for The Plastering Industry Run by Plasterers for Plasterers

Under the Spotlight with Alexander Devyatkin

From a young age, I was captivated by the intricate beauty of volumetric sculptures and reliefs created by master artisans throughout history. The way these forms could transform a space and tell a story resonated with me deeply, sparking a lifelong fascination with the art of plastering. Over time, my passion only grew stronger as I realized how much creativity, skill, and craftsmanship are involved in bringing architectural visions to life.

I began working in the plastering trade when I was just 17 years old. What initially started as a curious exploration quickly developed into a genuine passion that has continued to shape my career. To build a solid foundation, I had the privilege of studying at an art college, where I participated in creative workshops with contemporary sculptors. These experiences allowed me to expand my technical abilities and artistic vision, deeply influencing my approach to the craft.

Furthering my education, I attended the renowned Abramtsevo Art College, a place dedicated to fine arts and sculpture. My time there was invaluable, as it not only sharpened my technical skills but also nurtured a profound appreciation for the history and artistry behind plastering. I earned my formal qualification as a plaster sculptor, a significant milestone that opened up many opportunities and gave me the confidence to pursue increasingly challenging and rewarding projects.

Now, with more than 30 years of experience in the field, I continue to find joy and inspiration in my work every day. Over the years, I have contributed to a wide range of projects, each one helping me refine my craft and deepen my understanding of architectural styles and design principles. Although I do not officially employ apprentices, I always enjoy offering advice and sharing my knowledge with those eager to learn. Mentoring passionate newcomers and seeing them develop their own skills brings me great satisfaction.

When it comes to specialist skills, I pride myself on meticulous execution, a keen sensitivity to architectural styles, and an instinct for creating harmonious and balanced volumes. I believe that a successful project is a blend of technical precision, creativity, and respect for tradition, balanced with an openness to innovation.

Looking to the future, I am excited to continue growing my professional network, refining my craft, and taking on projects that challenge and inspire me. I am committed to preserving the timeless traditions of plastering while embracing new artistic possibilities, with the goal of inspiring future generations and ensuring the ongoing evolution of this beautiful, historic craft.
