Lath and Plaster

A Trade Magazine for The Plastering Industry Run by Plasterers for Plasterers

Taylor Plastering

Steven started learning plastering at the age of 14 working for his family at weekends and school holidays to earn extra pocket money at the age of 18 when he joined a course at Burnley College. However, he wasn’t the most dedicated student and left without earning a qualification. Instead, he gained hands-on experience by working in the plastering trade for several years, learning valuable skills along the way.

At 24, Steven decided to return to Burnley College to improve his skills and gain formal qualifications. Even though he had years of experience, he wanted to learn more, so he enrolled on the first-year course. However, after just a few weeks, his tutors saw his talent and moved him straight to the Level 3 programme.

During the Level 3 course, Steven refined his skills and gained confidence in his work. He was entered into the regional SkillBuild competition, and he gained first place, becoming the first Plastering Student from Burnley College to achieve this. This victory proved his dedication and passion for plastering and opened doors to new opportunities.

After completing college, Steven launched his own plastering business. Through hard work and determination, he built a strong company, employed several plasterers, and secured major contracts across North East Lancashire. His reputation grew, and his business thrived.

Eager to expand his knowledge, Steven took additional training in damp-proof courses and synthetic rendering systems. This allowed him to offer specialised services, making his business even more successful. He also mentored young apprentices, sharing his experience and inspiring the next generation of plasterers.

Steven’s journey from a struggling student to a skilled tradesman and business owner is a true success story. His determination, passion, and willingness to learn have shaped his career, proving that with hard work and perseverance, anyone can achieve their goals.
